project statement (2023)
From Nyan Cat to Hello Kitty, feline characters have captivated human imaginations for thousands of years. My latest body of work seeks to celebrate my fascination with these iconic creatures in media and delve into their transformation in representation through a blend of digital aesthetics and mixed media elements.Inspired by my childhood fascination with digital art and the boundless creative opportunities it offered, my characterizations of these digital cats are vivid, colorful, and often exaggerated. Drawing on the imagery of early 2000s digital spaces like YouTube, MySpace, and WebKinz, I explore their aesthetics in three dimensions.By subverting the rigid and standardized formats of online spaces and characters, my work challenges norms and celebrates the beauty of imperfection. These handmade, frumpy physical interpretations of digital icons act as abstractions of what is usually pixel-perfect. In this way, I aim to create a new visual language that reflects my love of cats, and pays homage to the limitless potential of digital art.home Next>
